Remy Human Hair: What You Need to Know
Apr 28, 2023
If you’ve ever shopped for hair extensions, chances are you’ve come across the words ‘Remy Hair’. Remy hair is one of the most popular extension options, renowned for its incredible quality and luscious appearance.
But what is Remy hair? Is it human? And is it worth the investment? Today, we’ll break down all you need to know about Remy hair and how it can revolutionise how you look at hair extensions. Let’s begin!
What is Remy Hair?
Remy hair is 100% natural, real human hair, but with a difference. Remy human hair is collected with the cuticle still intact, rather than artificial silicon cuticles used in regular human hair wigs. This comes with an incredible range of benefits, including:
- All strands of hair go in the same direction
- Silicon doesn’t wash out and tangle the hair
- Cuticles keep the hair moisturised and avoid dryness
- Keeps hair smooth and shiny
- Natural cuticles allow the hair to flow and move more naturally
- With the proper maintenance, it lasts longer than regular human hair wigs
How Is It Collected?
One of the biggest differences between human hair and Remy hair extensions is how it’s collected in the first place. Whereas human hair extensions are usually sourced from hairbrushes, drains and the floors of hair salons throughout Asia, Remy hair is collected from a paid donor and is usually cut from a ponytail to preserve the cuticles in the correct direction. While the majority of hair comes from India, in recent years there’s been an increase in hair from China, Eastern Europe and more.
The Extension Process
Because regular human hair is collected freely, the cuticles are all in opposing directions. To overcome this, it’s placed into an acid bath to remove the cuticles from the hair so that it can be replaced with artificial silicon ones.
On the other hand, because Remy hair is collected with its cuticles intact and already all going in the same direction, it only goes through very little processing to preserve its natural beauty and strength. No acid baths or harsh chemicals are required and the process is gentle and swift.
Styling and Maintenance
Just like human hair wigs, Remy hair can be dyed, bleached and styled with hairspray and other hair products to achieve your desired look. To keep your Remy hair as clean as possible, we recommend washing it with shampoo and conditioner at least once a week to rid it of any odours, pollutants and residue of any hair products.
When washing your Remy hair, avoid scrubbing or bunching it as this could result in the cuticles rubbing against one another and breaking over time. Instead, wash your hair gently in a downward motion with the palm of your hands gently and softly. Brush and detangle before washing and don’t brush your Remy hair while it’s still wet. After all, hair extensions can’t grow back no matter how high the quality is, so always treat your Remy hair with love and care.
If you choose to style your extensions with a hairdryer, curler or flat iron, always do so on the lowest heat possible to extend the life of your Remy hair for as long as possible
